When is it time to see a therapist?
If you are experiencing marital issues, struggling with depression, or dealing with addiction, the first step is recognizing these issues are having an impact on your life because they’re interfering with work or family.
Some signs of depression which could be an indication that it’s time to see a therapist are:
If your depression is mild - you’ve only felt this way for the past month or so - then therapy alone could be beneficial. If you’ve felt depressed for a long time, it’s time to see your doctor and potentially take medication.
If you believe in drug therapy, seeing a doctor first is wise. Some people believe that if they take medication it means they have a mental illness, something they are unwilling to face. This type of thinking further perpetuates the stigma surrounding mental health.
Many therapists provide an initial consultation for a reduced fee. I like to go straight into the first appointment with a client, to begin finding solutions for their issues.
